After nearly two months in immigration detention, Fabian Schmidt , a lawful permanent resident from New Hampshire, has been released — following a decisive legal victory led by Attorney David Keller, managing partner at Keller Law Group, LLC.

This high-profile case, which drew national and international attention, underscores the importance of experienced legal counsel when the stakes are highest.

The Detention That Sparked Outrage

Schmidt, originally from Germany and a U.S. resident since 2007, was detained on March 7, 2025, by U.S. Customs and Border Protection at Boston Logan Airport. He was returning from a trip to Luxembourg and held at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility in Rhode Island — despite holding a valid green card and having no active legal issues.

His detention — without a formal notice to appear or clear explanation — ignited public protests, prompted concern from German officials, and made national headlines. His fiancée and supporters described harsh conditions, including denial of medication, cold isolation, and physical mistreatment — allegations which CBP has denied.

David Keller Steps In

Amid public pressure and mounting legal uncertainty, Attorney David Keller took swift action , filing a motion to terminate the removal proceedings.

ICE’s case centered on a marijuana possession misdemeanor from 2015 — a charge that had already been dismissed under California’s revised drug laws. Keller argued that the legal basis for detention was not just weak — it was invalid.

On May 9, 2025 , the immigration judge ruled in Schmidt’s favor. The case was terminated. Schmidt was released that same day.

“This wasn’t just about immigration law. It was about basic constitutional rights. Fabian had done everything right — he deserved to go home,”
— David Keller, Managing Attorney

A Reunion — and a New Beginning

Shortly after his release, Schmidt reunited with his family and proposed to his fiancée. Their relief was shared across social media by supporters who had followed the case from day one.

Keller Law Group has since announced plans to pursue civil remedies for the alleged violations Fabian endured in custody.

“We intend to hold accountable anyone responsible for the conditions Fabian faced. Immigration status doesn’t strip away a person’s dignity.”

When It Matters Most, So Does Your Representation

This case is a reminder: immigration law isn’t just paperwork. It’s personal. It’s urgent. It’s life-changing.

Attorney David Keller brought clarity, speed, and strategy to a case others called “limbo.” And Fabian Schmidt walked free because of it.

Whether you’re facing detention, deportation, or just don’t know where your case stands — you deserve counsel that treats your future like it’s their own.
