Becoming a U.S. citizen is a dream for many immigrants who want to make America their permanent home. But the process of naturalization involves more than just submitting paperwork. It’s a structured journey that includes eligibility checks, interviews, and a deep commitment to the values and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship. At Keller Law Group, LLC, we guide clients through every step of this process, making it as smooth and stress-free as possible. Here’s a clear, step-by-step breakdown of how naturalization works according to the official process from USCIS.

Step 1: Determine If You Are Eligible to Become a U.S. Citizen

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Hold a green card (permanent resident) for at least 3 or 5 years depending on your situation
  • Demonstrate continuous residence and physical presence in the U.S.
  • Show good moral character
  • Be able to read, write, and speak basic English
  • Have knowledge of U.S. history and government (civics)
  • Some applicants, like spouses of U.S. citizens or military members, may qualify under different conditions

Step 2: Prepare Form N-400, the Application for Naturalization

  • Your green card
  • Past travel history
  • Tax records
  • Marriage certificates or divorce decrees (if applicable)

Step 3: Submit Form N-400 and Pay the Filing Fee

You can file Form N-400 online through your USCIS account or by mail. The current filing fee is $640 plus an $85 biometric services fee, totaling $725. Some applicants may qualify for a fee waiver or reduction.

Step 4: Attend the Biometrics Appointment

After filing, USCIS will schedule you for a biometrics appointment at your local ASC. Fingerprints, photo, and signature will be taken for an FBI background check.

Step 5: Complete the Naturalization Interview

A USCIS officer will review your application, ask background questions, and administer English and civics tests. Being well-prepared and honest is critical.

Step 6: Receive a Decision from USCIS on Your Form N-400

  • Granted: Your application is approved.
  • Continued: USCIS needs more info or another interview.
  • Denied: You did not meet requirements. Appeals or refiling may be possible.

Step 7: Receive a Notice to Take the Oath of Allegiance

If approved, USCIS will send you a notice to attend a naturalization ceremony. Sometimes this occurs the same day as your interview.

Step 8: Take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States

At the ceremony, you’ll pledge loyalty to the U.S., return your green card, and receive your Certificate of Naturalization.

Step 9: Understand Your Rights and Responsibilities as a U.S. Citizen

  • Right to vote in federal elections
  • Apply for a U.S. passport
  • Petition for family members to immigrate
  • Responsibilities: jury service, obeying laws, active civic participation

Step 10: Continue Your Journey as a U.S. Citizen

Citizenship opens doors to voting, public service, community engagement, and long-term security in the U.S.
