As trusted immigration attorneys, one of our top priorities at Keller Law Group, LLC is protecting our clients — not just in court, but also from the growing number of immigration-related scams that target applicants across the U.S. Whether you’re applying for a green card, renewing your visa, or waiting on a case decision, scammers know you’re vulnerable — and they’ve developed convincing ways to trick people into handing over personal details or payments. Here’s what you need to know to protect yourself, your family, and your immigration status.

The Rise of Immigration Scams

  • Fraudsters pose as USCIS officers with fake caller IDs, emails, or social accounts.
  • They may claim your visa is expiring or needs urgent renewal.
  • They might say there’s a problem with your file or you owe a fee/fine.
  • Threats of deportation if you don’t act quickly.
  • High-pressure tactics with urgent deadlines.

What USCIS Will Never Do

  • Ask for payment by phone: All payments go through secure USCIS channels.
  • Send emails from personal/suspicious domains: Real USCIS emails always end in .gov.
  • Ask for SSN or bank info: Never over phone, email, or text.
  • Threaten deportation by call: USCIS does not operate this way.

How to Spot a Scam

  • You’re rushed to act or pay immediately.
  • Email/message has grammatical errors or odd formatting.
  • Links don’t lead to a .gov website.
  • Asked to pay with gift cards, money apps, or crypto.
  • Caller gets aggressive if you hesitate.

Tips to Stay Protected

  • Verify senders → only trust USCIS emails ending in .gov.
  • Ignore payment requests via phone/text.
  • Check all URLs → must start with https:// and end in .gov.
  • Don’t share sensitive info (A-number, passport, payment).
  • Bookmark the official site: www.uscis.gov

If You’ve Been Targeted, Report It

Scammers often target many at once — reporting helps others avoid the same trap.
- Report directly to USCIS.
- File a complaint with the FTC: reportfraud.ftc.gov
